Lesson Objective: To continue the study of the Book of Jude with a more detailed review to assure that we understand the importance of the Book of Jude as it relates to the Church today.

 

Scriptures: Jude 1-13; Genesis 6: 1-4; Galatians 2:4; 1 John 3: 9,10; Matthew 7:21;

 

Memory Verse: Jude 1:1b To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ

 

  1. General overview of the Book of Jude
    1. Written by Jude who was half brother of Christ
      1. Mark 6:3
      2. Acts 1:14
    1. Written probably around 60-65 AD
      1. Book very similar to 2 Peter and Peter died around 66AD
    1. One of the shortest books in the New Testament
      1. 2 John is the shortest in number of verses
    1. Overall theme of the book is to beware of false teaching

 

  1. Who was Jude? (Verse 1)
    1. Half brother of Jesus and James
    2. Many say he may have become head of Church after death of James
    3. Convert to Christianity
      1. John 7: 3-5
      2. Mark 3:21
  1. What is the purpose of the book? (Verses 3-4)
    1. Changed the reason for his letter
    2. False teaching was not new
      1. Galatians 2:4
      2. Acts 15:5
  1. Two extremes which are still wrong
    1. Legalistic such as the Pharisees- Acts 15:5
    2. Those who say that you can live any type of life- Mathew 7:21

 

  1. Many say they believe, but their actions demonstrate differently (Verse 5)
    1. Children of Israel who came out of Egypt
      1. Hebrews 3:19
      2. 1 Corinthians 10:5
  1. Those who are rebellious (Verse 6)
    1. Genesis 6: 1-4
    2. Varied interpretations
      1. Inner marriage between descendants of Seth and Cain with Giants just meaning lawlessness
      2. Angels
        1. Psalms 148: 2,5
        2. Job 38:7
        3. Genesis 18:2, 16
  1. Problem with Sodom and Gomorrah (Verses 7-8)

 

  1. Battle for Moses Body (Verse 9)
    1. Many say that the battle is for the body so that the Israelites would not worship Moses in idolatry
    2. Some say that it is the battle between the law and grace.

 

  1. Discussion of Cain and Balaam (Verse 11)
    1. Genesis 4:7
    2. Revelations 2:14

 

  1. Discussion of those who eat among us but are wicked
    1. Bold in their actions – verse 12
    2. They have no substance- verse 12-13
